Classic Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan moment…
I ran across these blog posts about how the Motion Picture Academy did their voting for the Oscars, and I thought they were interesting enough to forward along. (By the way, thanks to Nikki Love for bringing these to my attention…)
Unlike most American elections we’re used to, the Oscars used an “instant runoff” procedure to get to the winners this [...]
As a recent article from Wired Science puts it, “one way to get noticed as a scientist is to tackle a really difficult problem.” So, they interviewed Cal Tech physicist Sean Carroll about his talk at the recent meeting of the Association for the Advancement of Science.
Carroll’s latest book “From Eternity to Here: The Quest for the Ultimate Theory of [...]
I highlighted a really cool article from the latest Wired Magazine on compressive sensing in my previous post. But there are three other cool items that are worth catching your eyes on:
- If you dig movies (I mean, you doesn’t!?), then this is kinda fun to fill in the blanks on some famous movie lines. Here’s the article called Bit [...]
Here’s an article about a new International Space Station mission to look for proof of dark matter (the stuff that seems to make the universe work differently than we think it does…). The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer is scheduled to be launched from the Space Shuttle in July 2010.
You can read the extensive article here.
Moon explorer Buzz Aldrin and Director of the Hayden Planetarium Neil deGrasse Tyson discuss the eightieth anniversary of Pluto’s discovery on The Takeaway. Too bad Pluto isn’t a planet anymore (it’s now merely a dwarf planet…), but it’s still worth commemorating.
You can listen to the audio here.
I like hearing about new and interesting ideas within science – they help us to explain our world better…
(And now, I step on my soapbox…) HOWEVER, I do think some ideas are just plain hooey, because they are less science and more intellectual rationalization for why we can’t explain things at the moment…
Take the Many-Worlds interpretation.
In quantum mechanics, particles in [...]
…is the New Oxford American Dictionary’s 2009 Word of the Year. The term “unfriend”, a verb, means to remove someone as a friend on a social networking Web site such as Facebook. (read more here…)
Oxford lexicographer Christine Lindberg says unfriend has “real lex appeal.” (ugh…. there is no such thing as a good pun…)
Admittedly, I think it’s just really interesting to [...]
Today is scheduled to be the day for the launch of Wolfram|Alpha – a new computational knowledge engine based upon some of Stephen Wolfram’s new scientific works.
I personally think that Stephen Wolfram’s ideas are fascinating, and could very well lead to new technologies and a greater understanding of what is possible. Wolfram represents one of those scientists that really strives [...]
