Watch What They Do

A good mantra always, but especially important in this election season.

This week is a short post, as we’re enjoying a summer break.  But it’s worth raising our attention to a truth-seeking principle heading into the fall – although it’s probably a good mantra for all seasons.

We are less than 90 days from Election Day, and it’s the season for reminding ourselves of something that MS NOW’s Rachel Maddow is famous for voicing: [1]

Watch what they do, not what they say.

Election season turns out to be inherently a “what they say” timeframe.  We need to rely on what a candidate says he or she will do in office and put some level of trust in that message.

That said, when we hear what a candidate says, we should remind ourselves to dig deeper to find out what truth underlies it.

What have they said in the past?  Have they lived up to that messaging and followed through?   Or do we end up just getting more talk, hoping we’ll believe them this time?

This holds in the corporate world as well, but in this important election environment, the impact of our upcoming decisions here could be higher than normal.
